Refreshing and Fun White Wines

When you choose a wine to drink, do you base it on the price, the country or the varietal? Maybe it’s one or maybe it’s all 3. Whatever works for you. I choose a wine to drink based on my mood mostly, but now that I know more about wine – certainly the varietal and the country. If I’m feeling warm on a sunny day, I crave something refreshing. If it’s cold outside, I want something to warm me, or maybe I’m just feeling like some thing fun to keep me happy. This is how I choose a bottle or a wine by the glass. So here are some fun finds I recently bought and enjoyed.

Terra Alta Garnacha Blanca 2012 (Spain) – It’s not as common to find this varietal (Garnacha Blanca), but when you do, don’t pass up the opportunity to try it! It’s simple and enjoyable, a little mineral mixed with fresh green grapes on the palate with a refreshing citrus boost, making it nice and crisp. Making the ultra refreshing and fun. This particular one was found at Larchmont Village Wine in Los Angeles, CA.

Lagar de Cervera Albarino Rias Baixas 2012 (Spain) – Probably one of my favourite grapes (Albarino) from Espana. This varietal screams Fun from the glass by being refreshingly citrusy (think Lemon Lime), with a mineral element to it (because of the NW region where it’s grown). Definitely a refreshing choice. Check out your favourite Private Liquor Store or if you’re in Los Angeles, stop by Vinoteque Restaurant on Melrose.

Filipa Pato 3B Rosé Método Tradicional (Portugal) – There aren’t too many times that I say no to a sparkling rosé. Rosé is always just a little different and always surprising than a white! This delightful find was a blend of Baga and Bical. It was a citrus bomb mixed with fresh red berries, dry on the palate with nice acidity. This was lots of fun to drink with girlfriends before we went out for a late dinner. Made in the same method as champagne, but a fraction of the price. Experiment with these beauties, but this one was found at Larchmont Village Wine in Los Angeles, CA.
