With only a skull as the outdoor sign identifying this restaurant, Cuchillo – sits on the edge of Gastown at 261 Powell Street just east of Main. A rather edgy neighborhood still, but this unique space has been transformed into a cool evening destination for nouveau Mexican cuisine! If you are a group or just 2, the huge long table in the middle of the room is the place to be.
With a few of us, it made sampling a little easier, but it was late and we ate light to save room for dessert. However, we did get to share the Mixto Traditionale and Steelhead Trout Ceviche. Ohhhh I love ceviche. And it is hard to get really good ceviche in this city, but not anymore. Great portion so a perfect sharing dish! Next, arrived the Cornbread with chili butter that you put on the top and watch it melt, while you salivate at the aromas of the delicious bread. We also destroyed the White Bean Fundido – a lovely dip with corn chips. Think healthier alternative to a humus but smoother and more addictive. We ended with a taco. Yes a taco. Although so full already, like donuts, I couldn’t say no to a taco. And how could I not order the Pulled Duck with Blackberry Habanero jam taco? When the restaurant Cobre existed, I loved some of their tacos too, coincidence there are similar dishes on this menu? I don’t think so 😉
As this was a birthday celebration, the kind owners and staff allowed us to bring in a wonderful local desert by The Lemon Square – soooo full but one makes room for this light lemon delectable delight of a dessert. Find them on Facebook!
So, venture east of Gastown and enjoy some delicious new age Mexican, you won’t be disappointed!
