New Spanish in town

There’s a new Spanish restaurant in town, the recently opened Espana. Remember the Chef who made Cibo a star restaurant? His name is Neil Taylor, a very talented young Chef, and he’s taken his talents from Italian to Spanish cuisine and created a modern style tapas “bar” restaurant.

Just back from Spain myself, I was very excited to try a new take on Spanish food in hopes it was similar.

I am happy to report, it’s very close to what you will find on a menu in Seville to Marbella and Barcelona. In two visits I’ve tried their Olives (large like jawbreakers, and marinated in orange and chili –  very tasty), Caperberries (pickled and they will surprise you), Crispy Chickpeas – which become addictive fast, Iberico  Salchichino – thinly sliced with black pepper and garlic flavours, Patatas Bravas (found on every menu in Spain), Catalan Spinach (so tasty!), Grilled Chorizo with orange and mint, Salt Cod and Potato Croquettes (croquettes are found at cafes, tapas bars and pinxto’s all over Spain), Grilled scallops (with a tomato sauce) – this was the smallest dish that we had, and of course who could forget – Manchego Cheese!

Prices are great at $5-$10 per dish, they are a nice portion – not too small and not too big. And although we didn’t enjoy a glass of wine for a mere $2-$3 like we did in Spain, we did enjoy a decently price good bottle of wine from Spain for just $30! Next time, I’ll be sampling a trio of Sherry’s from the Jerez region of Western Spain.

We’ll never be Spain for pricing, but we can certainly eat like them!
