I certainly have heard about Lombardo’s, seen the odd advertisement, but didn’t think much of it. Until one rainy Sunday on Commercial Drive during the Italy Day. It was really coming down on the streets, and with friends and their stroller, there was no chance we could make it fun! So one suggested “Il Mercado mall for pizza at Lombardo’s”. Well I guess, I thought. I would have liked to eat at a street vendor – freshly bbq’s corn on the cob, or a samosa or a taco….but the rain washed out that idea.
20 minutes later we are at a little table in this quaint little restaurant inside the mall. No windows, as you enter from the mall, but warmth, and friendly service and no rain! We started with some limoncello sodas while deciding on a pizza. The guys ordered a large calzone (classico), a medium caprese pizza with basil, tomato and boccocini, and a mediterranean salad. Along with this we enjoyed a carafe of sangiovese to celebrate it being sunday and out of the rain!
Okay, so apparently I was naïve about the size of the calzone…it was huge!! I swear it was a foot and a half long, filled with salty italian meats, ricotta cheese, onion and tomato. It was really good! The pizza was equally delightful, and was a nice vegetarian side to the meaty calzone. The salad was surprisingly a great value for the size, filled equally with fresh lettuces, cucumber, tomato, fresh mozzarella, grilled veggies, artichoke hearts, olives and prawns and scallops. Wowza. Soooo yummy. The “house dressing” was a basil heavy olive oil mix, and it was perfectly simple.
4 people, 1 large calzone (that fed two big boys & one girl getting in on the action), medium pizza, mediterranean salad, 4 sodas and carafe of wine = $25pp. That was the only meal we needed that afternoon. Our smiles indicated how satisfied we were for the value, the service and the delicious food. I discovered a new favourite that’s been around for over 20 years on the drive! The perfect getaway from the rain!
