Red Card – upscale sports bar

With a pre-opening tour from a friend, there was a little bit of intrigue here. A sports bar with red marble, red and black interior; a high-end pizza oven from Italy; many tv’s; not just hockey and football – meaning a European focus; with a goal to attract women sports fans, without being an intimidating male testosterone bar serving just beer. Maybe there is an inner sports fan in me, I thought, that would actually go out to watch a game?

First impression. Pretty darn nice. It’s much bigger on the inside than out. A long bar, with lots of tv’s within clear sight, lots of tables and an interior with a modern Italian appeal. It was comfortable, yet modern.

We enjoyed a Slipstream cream ale from Victoria – smooth, refreshing, not too heavy and not too hoppy – just the way I like it! On the menu you’ll find lots of beers on tap, Canadian bottled and import beers. A simple wine list and a few pages of cocktails. To share, we had the arancini (risotto) balls (with ragu centre) and chili mayo dip, very filling; beer battered onion rings – delicious!; and the oyster mushroom bruschetta with a chive butter. All very tasty, not expensive and filling enough, we didnt need anything else.

The pizza was not quite ready to go, so that will be the next visit, perhaps during a game. definitely worth a visit, this new italian inspired sports bar. The Olympics are not far away, perhaps a great spot to watch the live action! Located beside Uva Wine Bar at Seymour and Smithe, it’s easy to get to, yet far enough away from the Granville Street riff-raff. ;o)
